Mini vs. Full Family Session – Which One is Right For You? | Baltimore Photographer

Families

When families are deciding between a mini vs full family session, the choice often comes down to one thing: time. While mini sessions absolutely have their place, I’ve found myself falling more in love with full family sessions over the years, especially as I’ve embraced a more documentary approach to family photography.

As a mom, I’ve learned that some of the most meaningful moments happen when no one is too rushed.

They happen in the in-between. The laughter, the cuddles, the wild energy, and yes, even the chaos. Those moments tell the real story of your family. And most kiddos need more time to relax in front of the camera.

The Beauty of Letting Kids Lead

One of the biggest reasons I encourage full sessions is simple:
Kids need time.

Most children don’t jump out of the car ready to smile at a camera and share their most authentic selves. They need a chance to warm up, explore, and get comfortable. I’m probably a stranger to them unless we’ve worked together multiple times. When we slow down and remove the pressure, something beautiful happens. Their personalities start to shine.

My approach is very child-led.

I meet your family exactly where you’re at. We play, wander, snuggle, and follow your children’s cues rather than forcing moments that don’t feel natural.

The result is a gallery that really truly feels like your family, not just a collection of posed images.

That’s why I recommend considering a mini vs full family session before picking your photographer.

Mini vs Full Family Session: What’s the Difference?

Both session types serve a purpose, but they create very different experiences. So when you’re deciding what’s best for your family here are some things to consider:

Mini Sessions are:

  • Short and efficient
  • Great for updated holiday cards
  • Offered only during select seasons
  • Limited flexibility and variety
  • Best if you’ve worked with me before

Full Sessions are:

  • An extended time together (usually around an hour)
  • More time for children to relax and connect
  • Space for real interactions and storytelling about your fam
  • A gallery filled with both candid and lightly guided moments

When you book a full session, we’re not racing against the clock.

There’s room for kids to be themselves. There’s space for unexpected moments that often become your new favorite photographs that you hang on your walls.

The Moments You’ll Want to Remember

Years from now, your children probably won’t remember being asked to look at the camera and smile.

They will remember how it felt to be wrapped up in your arms.

They will remember running barefoot through a field, laughing with their siblings, or holding your hand while exploring somewhere new.

Those are the moments I want to preserve, because they’re the moments I know you’ll want to visually revisit in 10 or 15 years.

There will always be time for a few smiling-at-the-camera images. (We always get the money shot for grandparents & holiday cards 🙂 But the real magic lives in the connection, emotion, and movement that make your family uniquely yours.

Choosing the Right Session for Your Family

If you’re simply looking for a quick update, a mini session may be the perfect fit. That’s exactly why I offer them during select times of the year, especially in the Fall.

If you’d like to be the first to hear when mini sessions open, you can join the email list for upcoming announcement by clicking here.

But if you’re hoping for images that tell a deeper story, I truly believe full sessions are where the magic happens. When families ask me about mini vs full family session, my heart will almost always lean toward the experience that gives your family the time and freedom to simply be yourselves.
